What’s a Motif: A motif is a short musical phrase made up of several notes that create a distinctive rhythmic pattern. Since 1978, through her investigative work with sound and music, Arden has identified over 50 motifs that have their own distinct movement. The 21 basic ones are found on this title.

Student comments: “I was practicing for my next level exam in piano and I had to play a Beethoven Sonata. I had never liked Beethoven and was having enormous difficulty sitting down to practice. I had a session with Arden and she showed me how to refocus my playing using 5 different touches and several of her motifs. I was so amazed at how differently I felt in just a short period of time. I could sit for hours practicing Beethoven and I loved it! I passed with no problems. I now teach my piano students about the motifs and touches.” CH, Lanzarote Island , Canary Islands
“I’m from the Caribbean and play the steel drum. I took 4 sessions with Arden and she showed me that I was playing with a lot of tension in my body, particularly in my thumbs where I was holding the mallets. I practiced the 5 touches a lot just by themselves and as well about 10 of the INNER SOUND motifs. I noticed that I felt really good when I played my concerts and that more people were coming up afterwards and saying, ‘Hey man, that was great!’ One of the guys I play with told me that he couldn’t say exactly what was different but that the tone of the drum was ‘sweeter’ sounding.” HB, Oakland , CA
